Compact Workbench Plans

It is impossible to have large workbench if you have smaller house. For workshop area, you can’t even imagine it. Don’t worry! If you have smaller room inside your house, you can build your own fold-up compact workbench to fit perfectly with your limited space inside the house. You can add some drawers to organize your tools and hardware.

Step 1. Collect the Tools and the Materials

The tools for the project are:

  • Measuring tape
  • Saw-zaw
  • Wood clamps
  • Cordless drill
  • Framing square
  • Circular saw

The materials needed for this project are:

  • 2×4 boards
  • OSB
  • Deck screws

Step 2. Cut the Pieces for the Frames

  • 4 pieces of side rails, each with 45 inches long (the side rails are 3 inches shorter than the bench top length)
  • 4 pieces of legs, each with 32 inches long
  • 4 pieces of end rails, each with 26 inches long (similar to the short frame of the workbench)

Step 3. Build the Frame Sides

Arrange the pieces correctly to make all edges are close to being square. You can use the framing square to make sure that the edges are perfectly in square position. After the edges is properly measured, pre-drill one hole on every edge and screw it with 3 inches deck screw. The lower rail is situated 6 inches away from the legs ends. Each joint is screwed so you will have the total of four screws. In the process, the frame side is being squared up. After it is done, measure the side frames using the measuring tape to check the diagonal position.

Step 4. Build the Frames

The end rails are positioned into the frame sides. Two sides of the frames are being turned over and stationed for joining and clamping. When joining the edges of the frames, use 3 inches deck screws! For the shelves, they are being attached using 1-5/8 inches deck screws. Make some distances among the screws for six up to eight inches away. When all edges are being screwed, your top shelf of the workbench is done.

Step 5. Install the Lower Shelf

The lower shelf needs to have a notch on every edge in order to be able to fit around the legs. The notches should be around 3 inches x 5 inches. The size of 5 inches is to follow the panel length. During the assembly process, tilt the plywood in order to fit into its place. This lower shelf is also screwed using 1-5/8 inches deck screws.
