DIY Floating Ladder Shelf – with Plans

This DIY floating ladder shelf can be really suitable for any rooms or any decors. Generally, floating ladder shelf is the combination of the floating shelf and the ladder shelf. The combination of these two shelves is able to create such distinctive open shelves. Here, you will learn how to build this floating ladder shelf from step by step instructions.

Step 1. Materials and tools

  • Wood or paint stain
  • 1 ¼” finish nails
  • Wood glue
  • Brad nailer
  • Orbital sander
  • Miter saw
  • Lumber per the plans

Step 2. After the materials and tools are ready, first step to do is to cut the lumber per the plans into several pieces of wood. After all pieces are cut nicely, sand all edges of the pieces for smooth and nice look.

Step 3. Take 1×3 long boards and drill the holes throughout the center of the boards with ¾” spade bit. Do it carefully for finest result.

Step 4.  Collect all shelves pieces and assemble each of them. You can glue all pieces together. To give additional strength into each shelf structure, you can also secure them using finish nails.

Step 5. After all individual shelves are assembled, you can start staining or painting the shelves if you want. If you happen to have any space on both sides of the shelf to mount the sides, you can do it later on when the shelves are ready to be attached to the wall.

But, if you don’t have enough space to get to the shelf just from one side, you can make a template onto the floor with some painter’s tape. This template can be used to assemble all shelves before being mounted on to the wall.

Step 6. In this project, before the shelves are being assembled, the shelves are painted and coated in black color. Wait until the paint is set before assembling them altogether. Then, assemble all shelves in places whether they are on the floor or on the wall.

Start assembling first side of the shelves per the plans with glue. Don’t forget to give extra strength on the shelves joints with finish nails. Then, mount the wood dowel onto this first side with wood glue. To hold the wood dowel in place, you can mount the second side onto the shelves.

Step 7. After the overall shelf is built, you can mount it in to the wall with 3” screws or anchors into the studs directly. This floating shelf is proved to be the perfect storage for any room you install this shelf into. You can use the shelf to any rooms and can be used for any decors.
