Cut list

The cut diagram is shown in the picture. For this project, here is the cutting list:

  • 4 – 1 ½” x 2 ½” x 16 ¼” with 45 degrees cut at both sides
  • 2 – 1 ½” x 2 ½” x 9”
  • 2 – 1 ½” x 3 ½” x 13”
  • 1 – 1 ½” x 3 ½” x 34 ½”
  • 4 – 1 ½” x 3 ½” x 42”
  • 1 – 1 ½” x 3 ½” x 27”
  • 4 – 1 ½” x 3 ½” x 15 ½” with 15 degrees cut at both ends

Step 1. Prepare 34 ½” and 27” boards and drill 1 ½” pocket holes at each both ends. Then, prepare 9” and 13” boards. Measure the center of both boards and mark it. Attach the center of 9” onto the ends of 34 ½” board with glue and also 2 ½” screws. Then, attach the center of 13” boards onto 27” board ends.

Step 2. Prepare 13” piece and measure ½” from each end, mark the line. This line will be used to insert the bench legs. Attach the legs using 3” screws. Don’t forget to attach the legs from ½” top supports.

Step 3. Then, after the leg assembly is set, turn it upside down. Mark each leg end with 2” down. Make some countersink holes at the outside legs. Mount 9” boards between the legs with 3” or 2 ½” screws.

Step 4. Mark the line in the center of the assembly to determine the width and length of 34 ½” piece. On both sides of the length mark, measure ¾” and mark it. Do the same step for 27” piece.

Step 5. Next, slide twp 16 ¼” boards between bottom and top supports. You can trim this board if you want to. Line up each X piece end with the center mark and ¾” mark between them. Make some drills into 27” and 34 ½’ pieces and attach every X piece using 3” or 2 ½” screws.

Step 6.  Place the bench upside down. Slide another 2 pieces of 16 ¼” Xs between bottom and top supports. Repeat step #5 to attach these two pieces altogether into the bench.

Step 7. The bench base is ready!

Step 8. Take 6” measure from 42” board ends. Make some pre-drill holes as to mount the top piece onto the bench base.

Step 9. The bench top will have ½” overhanging from 13” piece sides and 4” overhanging from the piece ends. Mount the top onto the bench base and secure the joint using 2 ½” screws.

Step 10. The double X bench is ready for some finishing touch. In this project, the bench is painted in white after the bench frame is being stained with dark brown color.
