Step 1. Build the middle frame by attaching top 2×4 brace sized 41” and bottom 2×2 brace sized 41” into the frame side 2x4s sized 16 ½” with 1 ½” pocket hole drill. Attach the joint using some wood glue and 2 ½” screws. Make sure to check that the spacing is ¾” at seat back top.

Step 2. Build the side arms from mounting the top and front side braces. The top side is 2×4 brace with 16 ½” and the front side is 2×4 brace with 5 ½”. Make pre-drill holes using 1 ½” Kreg jig setting. Then, attach all braces using glue and 2 ½” screws. Apply the same step for building one more bench side arm.

Step 3. Insert the bottom side braces from 2×4 boards sized 15” into the side arm frame. Make some 1 ½” pocket holes to connect the brace. Attach the bottom brace using glue and 2 ½” screws. Use the same method for both bench arms.

Step 4. Attach two bench arms into top bench back support. Make pre-drill holes using 1 ½” Kreg jig. Then, secure all pieces using glue and 2 ½” screws.

Step 5. Then, attach two pieces of 1×8 (48”) seat supports onto the top bench with wood glue and wood screws or brad nails. These two pieces should be in line with the bench outside parts.

Step 6. After the seat support sides are set, insert the middle piece from 1×3 (48”) with wood glue and screws. Make sure to leave ¼” space between the top bench boards.

Step 7. Build the bottom half of coffee bench. Attach top and bottom middle braces into the side frame using 1 ½” pocket holes, wood glue and 2 ½” screws. The bottom middle brace needs to be installed faced down. The top middle brace has to be inset by ¾” just like the top.

Step 8. Build the side arms of bottom half. Attach top side and front side braces into 2x4s sized 17 ¼”. Secure the joint using wood glue and 2 ½” screws. Build two side arms!

Step 9. Attach two side arms into bottom back support. Secure the joint using glue and 2 ½” screws.

Step 10. Attach 2x4s sized 41” into bottom bench with glue and 2 ½” screws. Make sure that this 2×4 41” needs to be inset 1 ½” from bench outside part.

Step 11.  Attach 2x4s sized 9 ½” brace into the bottom bench with glue and screws.

Step 12. Attach 1x8s sized 48” into bottom bench with glue and wood screws.

Step 13. Attach 1x3s sized 48” into bottom bench with glue and wood screws. Make sure that there is ¼” gap between each board.

Step 14. Build the backs for the convertible bench. You can add some hardware to join the top and the bottom parts of the bench altogether.
