There are several options to make a wood more valuable, one of them is by carving it. Many people think that the job is only for skilled professional. Few people understand that even the simplest carving skill could help you producing a great item. See how good you are at carving from these beginners project.
One of the basic technique in carving is removing the background and leaving the character behind. Print the writing you want on a transparent paper. For the first timer, it is suggested to take lines. Curvy design takes another skill to master. Using a V-tool, you can start setting the tool on low grip. Slowly but steadily, remove the waste inside the lines. Don’t worry about messy result. Later you could handle it.
Then move to the background. Lower the level of your background, so the character you just carved is on the higher level. For the next step, you will change your equipment. Take a gouge that fit the lines, perfect to reach sides and corners of the character. Tap lightly to make a short stop, defining the character.
For any character that has slight curve, it would be hard to bring straight tools to work. To clean the corners, you need special tools like skew chisels and grounding tools. Both have curved point to help you with the work.
Do you believe that the beginning of this beautiful art is a coin? Bring your penny to the bottom of the board and mark the outer circle. Using a pen, mark the center point for the compass. Draw half circle with it. Don’t forget to mark how deep you want the fan to be. Carefully outline the small circle before you lower the half circle.
Using a scooping tool, start your work from the outer half circle. To control your power, use your left hand to support the handle, while the right hand gently shove to the wood. Finish the carving layer by layer, not part by part. It would be easier for you. Then take the sculptor’s rasp to smoothly wipe the surface.
The lower part of the fan should be removed with a bench chisel. To define the details of the fan, take V-parting tool. Follow the grain instead of going against it. At last, sand the surface.
Take a look at at the carved present on your table. Do you even wonder how the carpenters get it done? The tools are similar, but the things that could be carved is limitless. In this case, skills play important role. Surprisingly, the basic steps are not too much for a zero beginner. You don’t need complete equipment either.
